2D Class Week 07 Basic Lighting

This week we had off for Hurricane Matthew, with which I unfortunately share a name. I spent 3.3 hours of my time locked inside working on this assignment. For this week, we were tasked with taking a "found object" and setting up a 3 point lighting setup for it. I happened to have my headphones close by and thought that they'd be a fun bit of subject matter. 2d has been the class I've struggled in most this semester, but I'd have to say that I'm quite pleased and proud of this digital painting. I feel it came out really well and am hopeful to receive my highest grade yet in this class. I started by fleshing out the silhouette of the headphones, scaling it up to fit the canvas, and then adding the blue coloring. After that I just started layering in low opacity shadow and using the smudge tool to smooth out shadows. I'd never used the smudge tool before coming to FIEA, but I'd now have to crown it as the unsung hero of digital painting. After that, I went in and did the same for the shadows.

  1. Great work on this, you choose a rather challenging piece. The only thing I could say is perhaps you could add a little micro texture into the plastic.
